Choosing the PERFECT Act

The Producers and organizers of Storm the Stage were asked the question:

'Should we be looking at the new musicals/dramas when choosing a song/monologue?'

The simple answer to that is NO!!!

You are NOT choosing a song or monologue. You are choosing a CHARACTER. The PERFECT character for you. Hopefully these few points will assist you in that choice. Your character will be part of a story. You have one song or monologue to tell that story. Choose a character that you can SELL to your audience.

1. Think about WHAT and WHO you are delivering to your audience. You are in the business of ENTERTAINING!!!  ENTERTAINING your audience is your first key point to consider.

2. Research!!! Research!!! Research!!! Check the internet! Read books. Read about the writers and performers who have given us such a wealth of material and performances to choose from. Educate yourself on your craft and especially on productions from today and yesterday.

3. Choose a character, whose songs/monologues are suitable to your voice whether spoken or sung.

4. Costuming is important. Research your character and take into account: gender, era, season etc.

5. Storm the Stage material does NOT have to be age specific.

6. Technique is important (NO!!! You do not have to be taking regular singing/drama classes to have technique).

7. Audience appeal is always an important point to consider when choosing a character.

8. Movement/Choreography needs to suit your character.

9. Choose a character you are comfortable in portraying.

10. Finally!!! (Drum Roll) Delivery is everything -  including expression on all levels and originality in your presentation LIVE and BREATHE your character. Jump in with both feet. Get yourself WET!!!

Deliver on every level and Good Luck!!!
